KNOW BEFORE YOU GOTo help make your trip as smooth and enjoyable as possible, here are a few helpful tips for traveling in Tuscany:
Passport Requirements
Please make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates.
Electrical Outlets
Italy uses Type C, F, and L plugs with 230V voltage. If traveling from the United States, you will need a European power adapter.
Cell Service
Many travelers choose to use international phone plans or eSIMs. Wi-Fi will be available at the property.
Language
Italian is the primary language, but many people in tourist areas speak English. A few simple phrases like “grazie” (thank you) and “buongiorno” (good morning) are always appreciated.
Travel Insurance
While not required, travel insurance can be helpful in case of unexpected travel delays or changes.
Arrival Timing
If you plan to arrive before check-in at the property, we recommend exploring nearby towns, grabbing lunch at a local trattoria, or enjoying a glass of wine at one of the many vineyards in the area. (see the Travel tab for recommendations)
Timezone changes
If you're traveling from the United States, Italy is typically 6 hours ahead of Eastern Time.
Register Your Trip (STEP Program)
U.S. travelers may wish to register their trip with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) through the U.S. Department of State. This free service allows the U.S. government to contact you in case of an emergency, natural disaster, or important travel alerts while you are abroad.
It also helps the U.S. Embassy reach you if necessary and allows family members to contact you in the event of an emergency.
You can register your trip here:

The local currency in Italy is the Euro (€). Most restaurants, shops, and businesses accept major credit cards, but we recommend bringing a small amount of cash for smaller cafés, taxis, markets, or local shops.
ATMs are widely available in nearby towns if you need to withdraw cash during your stay.
For convenience, we recommend: Notifying your bank and credit card company of international travel, bringing a credit card with no foreign transaction fees if possible or having a small amount of Euros for quick purchases
Tipping in Italy is not expected like it is in the United States, but rounding up the bill or leaving a small tip for excellent service is always appreciated.
Tax Free / VAT refund
If you plan to shop while in Italy, many stores offer “Tax Free Shopping” for international travelers.
How it works:
· When making a qualifying purchase, ask the store for a Tax Free / VAT refund form.
· Keep your receipt and purchased items with you.
· At the airport when departing the EU, visit the VAT refund or customs desk before checking your bags.
· After the form is validated, you can receive your refund through a refund kiosk, credit card reimbursement, or refund service.
Things to keep in mind:
· VAT refunds typically apply to physical goods (such as clothing, leather goods, or souvenirs).
· Food, hotels, and restaurants are not eligible for VAT refunds.
· Refunds must be processed when departing the European Union, not when returning to the United States.
If you plan on shopping during your trip, this can be a great way to save a little on purchases to bring home.
